New Year Greeting

Dear Friend,

Let us begin by sending you a warm New Year’s greetings from everyone at the American Iranian Council.

The past year has been a difficult one.  In Iran, following the death of Mahsa Amini, the Women, Life, Freedom movement gained momentum resulting in clashes between the government and protestors.  AIC called for the government of Iran to curb its use of force against protesters and accept its peoples’ legitimate demands. Western governments' support for the protests further increased tension between them and Iran.

In the broader context of US-Iran relations, JCPOA negotiations have come to a standstill and there is little to no possibility that it can be revived. Iran continues to support Russia in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and US support for the Israel-Hamas war has raised the specter of a broader regional war engulfing the US as well.  AIC’s President, Dr. Amirahmadi recently presented his views for reducing tensions and creating peace in the Middle East here.

With this difficult international backdrop in mind, 2024 will certainly not start smoothly.  It is also important to bear in mind that 2024 is a US presidential election year and that all aspects of international relations will inevitably be affected by this election.

AIC is a long-standing non-profit, non-partisan educational organization with more than three decades of experience working with administrations on both sides of the political aisle.  Because of our longevity and expertise, as well as the caliber of our leadership, we are well-positioned and prepared to work with any administration to achieve meaningful results towards improved understanding and dialogue.

AIC has achieved unparalleled accomplishments throughout the years, most notably including the historic speech of State Secretary Madeleine Albright at an AIC event in 2000 in which she expressed regret about the CIA-engineered 1953 coup in Iran and lifted certain sanctions. That regret then was followed by an apology by President Bill Clinton.

As we look forward to 2024, AIC is particularly focused on improving understanding between the US and Iran through various educational and outreach initiatives.  We continue to publish the AIC Update, Iran Digest, Media Guides, Myth vs. Fact series and Industry Spotlights.
