Industry Spotlight: Telecommunications

Following last year’s implementation of the nuclear deal, companies around the world have taken a serious interest in the Iranian telecommunications industry.  The population of Iran, the second-largest in the Middle East, is mostly young – over 60% of Iranians are below the age of 30 – and, therefore, more likely to consume new technologies, cellular devices, and electronics. Thanks to deregulation, the introduction of 3G and 4G network services, and a robust start-up culture, Iran’s telecom industry offers a promising, and highly lucrative, new frontier for the global economy.

In May, SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest carrier, announced that it would be partnering with the Iranian government to implement new infrastructure, information technology, and energy solutions to various state-owned enterprises. And, it seems, this joint venture will have enduring benefits for both the Iranian people and foreign investors. SK Telecom’s Chief Executive Officer, Jang Dong-hyun, said, “We and our Iranian partners have agreed to expand our partnerships. SK Telecom is also committed to contributing to Iran’s economic growth in the future."

In April, Italtel, a leading Italian firm that specializes in network and internet technologies, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Telecommunication Company of Iran, agreeing to play a significant role in modernizing Iran’s telecom network. Stefano Pilleri, Chief Executive Officer of Italtel, is optimistic about opportunities for greater cooperation in the future. On the day of the memorandum’s signing, he said, “The MoU signed today represents a fundamental step forward in the cooperation between Italy and Iran and we are proud to be part of this important project.”
